Probabilities for jumping fault segment stepovers

چکیده
[1] Seismic hazard analysis relies heavily on the segmentation of faults. The ability of ruptures to break multiple segments has a big impact on estimated hazard. Current practice for estimating multiple segment breakage relies on panels of experts voting on their opinions for each case. Here, we explore the probability of elastodynamic ruptures jumping segment stepovers in numerical simulations of segmented fault systems. We find a simple functional form for the probability of jumping a segment stepover as a function of stepover distance: an exponential fal loff with distance. We suggest this simple parameterization of jumping probabilities, combined with sparse observational data to fix the lengthscale parameter, as a new approach to estimating multisegment earthquake hazard. The Effects of Double Fault Bends on Rupture Propagation: A Geometrical Parameter Study
We use the 2D finite element method to determine how geometrical parameters determine whether rupture will propagate across a linked stepover in a strike-slip fault. The end segments of the fault system are aligned in the direction of maximum shear, and the length and angle of the linking segment are allowed to vary. We observe that ruptures propagate through extensional stepovers with steeper ...
متن کاملDynamical Jumping Real-Time Fault-Tolerant Routing Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks
In time-critical wireless sensor network (WSN) applications, a high degree of reliability is commonly required. A dynamical jumping real-time fault-tolerant routing protocol (DMRF) is proposed in this paper. Each node utilizes the remaining transmission time of the data packets and the state of the forwarding candidate node set to dynamically choose the next hop. Once node failure, network cong...
متن کاملFault tolerant system with imperfect coverage, reboot and server vacation
This study is concerned with the performance modeling of a fault tolerant system consisting of operating units supported by a combination of warm and cold spares. The on-line as well as warm standby units are subject to failures and are send for the repair to a repair facility having single repairman which is prone to failure. If the failed unit is not detected, the system enters into an unsafe...
متن کاملDetection of fault segments based on P–T dihedra analysis along the North Tabriz fault, NW Iran
Detection of fault segments is an essential step for tracking main transverse faults. General observations from field studies as well as attitude measurements can give an overall understanding of the lengths of the segments, but these are not always sufficient to accurately identify and characterize them. In this study, we analyze P–T dihedra variations based on their eigenvalues to detect faul...
متن کاملPrediction Probabilities From Foreshocks
When any earthquake occurs, the possibility that it might be a foreshock increases the probability that a larger earthquake will occur nearby within the next few days. Clearly, the probability of a very large earthquake ought to be higher if the candidate foreshock were on or near a fault capable of producing that very large mainshock, especially if the fault is towards the end of its seismic c...
